URUGUAY
Unfortunately, most visitors to South America
see Uruguay as a mere stepping stone between Brazil
and Argentina, stopping only along the south coast
at the capital Montevideo, the historic Colonia
del Sacramento or the exclusive resort of Punta
del Este.
While it surely lacks the obvious appeal of its
larger neighbours, Uruguay does merit an extended
visit; not only is its capital city, Montevideo,
one of the more agreeable around, but the coast
is larded with unspoilt beaches and attractive
fishing villages.
The interior of the country is ideal for those
who like their nature raw and anyone looking to
be pampered can head to one of the multiple thermal
resorts. Economic crisis means that travelling
around the country – traditionally one of the
more expensive in South America – has never been
more affordable, and there is an extensive and
efficient transport system in operation, as well
as numerous border crossings to Brazil and Argentina.
