Villa Theodora has been in our family since it was built over two hundred years ago. It had fallen derelict until in 1999 it was renovated and greatly enlarged, yet preserving its old-world charm, with the addition of a large kitchen/diner which has seated sixteen persons comfortably upon festive occasions; a very spacious lounge sometimes used as a small concert hall when rare bad weather drives indoors the audience Agios Ioannis Music Week in September; a bathroom/toilet and a showerroom/toilet; an extensive patio surrounding a 10 by 5 metre swimming pool and a large garden with lawn, flowers, shrubs, many trees, a swing and a climbing frame. The detached site is totally enclosed in a very quiet part of the old village yet only 100 metres from the village square with its ancient taverna serving mouth-watering meals, snacks and drinks, where parents may sit chatting, nibbling and sipping while their children mingle with others playing in a magnificent mixture of languages that they all seem to understand.
Agios Ioannis is an almost unaltered traditional Greek island village set amongst olive and orange groves, It has become a centre for family holidays, especially for those who wish to escape the disco and glitzy bars of seaside holidays, though those facilities are within easy reach for those who want them.
Aqualand, a very large water-park with rides, slides, waterways and pools for everyone, is only one kilometre from Villa Theodora. There are other tavernas, restaurants, a minimarket, supermarkets, a bakery, a pharmacy, all within easy reach. Corfu Town with its port and airport is only seven miles away, connected by good bus services. Villa Theodora being exactly in the centre of the island nothing is very far away, beaches to east and west and the golf course no more than four kilometres.
Rent a car to enjoy to a full the stunning beauty of this island and its ancient buildings. Visit Town to sample its rich variety of shops, to admire its ornate churches, to clamber upon the massive fortifications, to wander around the maze of ancient lanes, to relax in the leafy parks, to sample the delicacies at the wide range of cafes, tavernas and restaurants, or to dance the night away at a disco. There is something for everybody.
Hire a boat to cruise along the shore and land to picnic on a secluded beach with nobody else in sight, to explore caves or to moor up at the jetty of a waterside taverna and enjoy their menu. Corfiots are justifiably proud of their cooking. Totally organic food is prepared and cooked on the premises; there is no room for genetically-modified junk here!
There are a number of walks mapped to suit any age and ability.
Off-season is a good time for that, when the temperature stabilises around 17 or 18C.
